Christian Assist Trust (CAT) is a charitable trust that was developed to provide a free community service to members of the public. We offer financial education, budgeting support, advocacy and pastoral care to assist people in an ongoing journey of improving their holistic well-being. CAT has been in existence since 1991 and in 2006, was incorporated as a charitable trust (CC10470).

Our mission is to assist our clients to become financially confident and independent. We help them to identify opportunities and educate them to improve their financial awareness. We call this “Financial Pastoral Care”. Families and young people are our priority however we are seeing a need to assist the elderly.

At Christian Assist we work alongside many community agencies in West and Central Auckland. Although we are based in West Auckland Massey, people come from far and wide and we also travel out. Education has become a very important part of our service. We have developed financial education programmes that have been running for over 4 years. Our programmes are a fun and interactive learning experience.

CAT ran a weekly financial course at a WINZ West Auckland office and over 3 years 700 people attended. We are contracted by Auckland Youth Providers to run Youth Financial Programmes that sow into the next generation. We received feedback that people are happier and less stressed with their finances, creating consistency and sustainability. Where necessary we assist in negotiating with their creditors as part of our advocacy service. By practising this pastoral care approach, financial health improves creating a better present and future for clients.

Our Board of Trustees is made up of people from the community with a diverse range of qualifications, e.g. Law, Chief Financial Officer, IT Management, Social Service Manager, and Charity Manager who oversees our governance procedures.

CAT is also a member of the Christian Budgeting New Zealand Inc. (CBNZ) of which our manager Ken Ogden is Chairperson. You can be ensured that we are constantly assessing the actual services we offer to meet the ever-changing and increasing needs of the communities.

Our patron is Barry McGee.

CAT is managed by Ken Ogden, who also provides volunteer time as a Budget Advisor. There are currently four part time staff and one volunteer staff.
